WA Wildflowers Tour
Notes and photographs from a spring wildflower tour in Western Australia, September 2025
A trip around the central grain-growing area of WA — coast and inland between Perth and Geraldton — in September 2025, looking for wildflowers (see the wildflower gallery).
The tour took in Perth and the Swan River, the extraordinary Pinnacles Desert near Cervantes, Three Springs and the rail junction at the heart of the grain belt, the gorges and coastline of Kalbarri and the Murchison River. The wildlife was equally remarkable — Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos, Nankeen Kestrels, Western Thornbills, and the brilliant Red-capped Robin among the birds encountered along the way.
The wildflower season in September transforms the grain belt: canola fields extend horizon to horizon, and roadsides and remnant bushland fill with orchids, everlastings, banksias and kangaroo paws. The wildflower gallery has the full collection of flower images from the trip.
